Independent Curator (contract)

5-month contract: April-August 2018 (20 weeks), hours variable


*Extensive travel/some evening and weekend work will be required

Tangled Art + Disability is boldly redefining how the world experiences art and those who create it. We are a not for profit art + disability organization dedicated to connecting professional and emerging artists, the arts community and a diverse public through creative passion and artistic excellence. Our mandate is to support disability- identified artists, to cultivate disability arts in Canada, and to enhance access to the arts for artists and audiences of all abilities.

Tangled invites applications from Deaf, Mad or disability-identified people for the position of Independent Curator (contract). The goal of the Independent Curator is to manage the project Promoting Human Flourishing in the Context of Medical Assistance in Dying which is an on-going partnership with the Canadian Association for Community Living (CACL). This project will culminate bringing together seven artists to exhibit their work in the Tangled Art Gallery in the fall of 2018. This position will also oversee and mentor the work of the Curator-in-Residence.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Independent Curator will manage the artist selection process and facilitate an artist workshop in May 2018. The Independent Curator will also work with each artist to develop their individual exhibit (scheduled for the fall of 2018) and will travel to each of their home regions to develop a community component of their project. The Independent Curator will also be responsible for managing the relationship between the project partners. The position is a set contract, please note there will be extensive travel over the summer of 2018.


  • Review artist submissions and work alongside Curator-in-Residence and Executive Director to select artists.
  • Develop and facilitate artist workshop in May 2018.
  • Travel to individual artist local region (over the summer of 2018), to develop exhibit work and possible related community projects.
  • Manage and support relationships with project partners.
  • Mentor the Curator-in-Residence.
  • Develop individual exhibits from this project for the Tangled Gallery.
  • Explore opportunities for individual exhibits to travel.


  • Minimum three years curatorial experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience within Deaf, Mad and disability arts and culture;
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills and ability to effectively coordinate a number of projects simultaneously;
  • Ability to work independently, demonstrate initiative and adhere to deadlines with minimal supervision;
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills with key stakeholders and artists;
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to working collaboratively and with collegial spirit;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Knowledge of and experience with AODA legislation is considered an asset.
